Singing through the Night:
Courageous Stories of Faith from Women in the Persecuted Church
By Anneke Companjen
(Revel, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 2007, pp. 296, paperback)
Anneke Companjen, also author of Hidden Sorrow, Lasting Joy, shares the accounts of women in around the world who have endured great persecution for their faith. Each chapter is titled with a truth that these women learned and held onto throughout their trials. One of the titles is also the title of the book, and other chapter titles include: Stay Close to Jesus; Feed on God’s Word; Bless, Do Not Curse; Don’t Waste Your Sorrows; and God’s Grace is Sufficient. Each chapter ends with scriptures pertinent to that truth, and questions to reflect on. The last question of each chapter asks the reader, “How can you better pray for our persecuted sisters?”
The stories are from all over the world—China, Cuba, Eritrea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Peru. Anneke adds her own personal reflections in each chapter. She and her husband are affiliated with Open Doors, a ministry providing Bibles to restricted areas of the world.
Singing through the Night tells the stories of 20 women who stood faithful in the midst of persecution and suffering. Their stories are inspiring and instructive on how to trust and obey God in the midst of great suffering. The honesty of their stories, and their choice to remain faithful in serving God is not only inspiring, but also challenging.
