Extreme Marriage: Mastering the Ever-Changing, Lifelong Adventure
By Terry Owens
(Waterbrook Press, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 2005; pp. 246, hardback)
The author describes marriage as the ultimate extreme sport, linking many common challenges all married couples face with the outdoor sports of skydiving, caving, high-altitude climbing, and more. He asserts that just as teamwork is vital in winning or even surviving in dangerous, challenging extreme sports, so teamwork is vital in making marriage exhilarating and enduring.
In each chapter, he explains an extreme sport and compares it to a specific principle for an unbeatable marriage. At the end of each, a summary and reflection questions are given to guide a couple’s discussion of the material.
For example, in the second chapter he describes the sport of adventure racing, specifically the team-sport event called The Raid and the importance of the team — and married couples — agreeing on the direction they want to go.
Marriage can and should be fulfilling for each spouse — personally and spiritually. This book is the “high energy guide for the intense adventure of lifelong love.”
