Lessons I Learned in the Dark
By Jennifer Rothschild (Multnomah Publishers, Sisters, Ore., 215 pages, paperback)
Despite the retinal disease which claimed her eyesight, Jennifer has gone on to become a speaker, author, and recording artist as well as a wife and mother. In this book she takes vignettes from her life and turns them into principles for Christian living and maturity.
The chapter that most challenged me was entitled “Wait on God.” She shares stories of having to wait on others to get her what she couldn’t get for herself and then discusses the ways we wait. She states, “I’ve learned that although waiting is never fun, it’s always healthy. It’s like spiritual weightlifting. It strengthens us by teaching us that our joy and peace and hope don’t depend on when our needs and wants are met. Instead, they come from what we choose to do in the meantime, when life is hard and so is waiting.”
This book can be summed up by the comments of Stephen Arterburn printed on the back cover of the book: “Jennifer may be blind but she is leading people who are in the dark to really see God and to act on His empowering love.”
