Shannon Polk
Lawyer/Grantmaker/M.Div Student
Shannon Polk is a thirty-something participant in the D. Min women's leadership cohort at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in Springfield, Missouri. By education, she is a lawyer. By vocation, she is an associate program officer at the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation in Flint, Michigan. By calling, she is studying to become a credentialed minister in the Assemblies of God. She lives with her husband, Jon, in Flint.
Presently, she is developing a program called Train to Send at her home church, The Freedom Center, in Fenton. The program is designed to help members of the congregation pursue the call of ministry and study to receive their licensing. Her pastor, Jim Wiegand, plans to plant 30 churches, and he would like to have a group of ministers trained to support those ministries in a variety of ways from senior pastor to various staff positions.
“In my role as grantmaker, I recommend funding for community-based organizations. As one of my favorite songwriters, Israel Houghton has stated, 'to worship requires a heart for social justice,'" says Shannon. “The values of my faith encourage my work in the field of philanthropy. I also love helping people find their destiny and pursue it. I am excited about assisting my pastor in spreading the gospel through the various church plants but I am equally thrilled about helping people fulfill their God-given purpose."
